True the Looking Glass
2012
inspired by Alice in Wonderland and Through the
Looking
Glass with a nod to my own neurotic tendencies. In the Carroll
books, the
protagonist, Alice is often wondering about herself, dealing with
identity issues, who she is or should be when she grows up, where
she is
[physically and
psychologically] and a constant to attempt to discern what and who
is real, who to believe, who to trust and ultimately...where to go.
The portraits I am
creating deal with these thoughts - what we say about ourselves, to ourselves and how we
see ourselves in the world and in the mirror. These pieces reflect the voices in our
heads - from bouts of self-doubt to out of control egos. They're not necessarily
"pretty pictures" but more statement pieces. "Gemini"
explores two sides of one personality the good and evil twin, "Noise" deals
with body image and ageism in regard to ability and acceptance in
society and the voices in our heads [or is it just mine?]. These are just the first two in the series. |

Angels & Icons:
2007 - 2010
What started as a combination of a late-night devotional in the studio, a well-timed viewing of icons at a Russian Orthodox Church in Anchorage, and an afternoon reading mythology...I embarked on the creation of a series that began with portraits of an angel, a saint, a madonna...and then my thinking veered off to "icons" of a different sort; iconic images from art, mythology, religions, politics, history, and fashion. These are portraits created using junk mail and paper ephemera; and might also feature
tax forms, string, Christmas cards, jewels, relfective papers, netting, sequins, and a bit of paint.

Emotional Influences:
2011-present
These pieces tie two things together: an emotion and a song. Inspired by the emotion evoked by a haunting melody or lyrics, I first created the image to reflect the emotion and then let the music guide my hand in embellishing the portrait. From opera to jazz to rock, country and Broadway. Other than the usual junk mail, these might include lyrics on tissue, jewels, photos, painted lyrics, doilies and a lot of emotion.

This seems to be the year of the "War on Women" - contraception, abortion, negative portrayals in the media...What is going on?
In response, this series of portraits were created in a slightly different manner - although every piece in my collection starts out as a painting, these small paintings are acrylic on canvas, embellished with a variety of materials: tiny tiles, gold leaf, tissue, and mosaic "tiles" I created from gels, inks and paint. Each portrait conveys a positive aspect of womanhood.
